The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator in partnership with the Mpumalanga Liquor Traders Forum and have embarked on a pilot project at the Thembisile Hani municipality with the aim to promote compliance within the liquor industry in Mpumalanga on 22 August 2018.

This is the first of its kind in the province where 93 liquor outlets have been identified within the municipality to participate in it. An estimated number of about 100 liquor traders attended the project meeting. Four areas have been identified in the area namely, Verena, Kwaggafontein and KwaMhlanga.

The MER emphasised during the project meeting that no liquor licences will be issued for shebeens and taverns that operate six to six.

“Six to six and non-compliant liquor outlets are still a huge problem and we are told that people don’t want to leave the taverns when they have to close. We also have a huge challenge with outlets that are selling alcohol to underage children and pregnant woman. This project aims to improve the way liquor outlets operate,” said MER official.

“Noise, vehicle parking and the time to operate are some of the things that are contributing greatly to our current problems in this industry. We expect every liquor trader to follow the rules, it is not our aim to close down businesses because we are aware that you have families to take care off,” he added.

The Chairperson for Mpumalanga liquor Traders Forum, appreciated the partnership with the two organisations and urged liquor traders to join forums within their areas so they can all do the correct thing.

“We appreciate this opportunity. This is a new dawn for us as liquor traders. If we can join hands and work together we can achieve more. I urge all the liquor traders who are not belonging to any forum to come and join us. This will assist us to have a collective discussion and speak in one voice,” added the representative for the Mpumalanga Liquor Traders Forum.
